With its magnetic sensor head the Portamonitor™ is attached to the outer casing of machinery and takes readings over a short period to assess the condition of the moving parts within. It achieves this by measuring the Ultrasonic signature given off by the bearing as it is in operation.

  • Decibel Level – the decibel reading is used for longer term condition monitoring with readings taken periodically and compared to previous readings to chart how specific bearings are degrading over time. This allows for predictions of potential failures and helps avoid expensive failures by building a very easy preventative maintenance scheme into existing procedures
  • Distress Level – The distress level offers an ideal solution for visiting Superintendents onboard or sporadic testing as it provides a rough indication for the current condition of each bearing over a 0 – 40 scale. If a bearing consistently measures over 10, action of some kind is required to lubricate, examine or repair that specific machinery.

To complement our Portascanner™ Watertight package, the miniature Portamonitor™ has been designed to test bearings and rotating machinery on board ships and Naval vessels. Trials are being conducted with a leading Navy shortly. The Portamonitor™ aids in the identification of mechanically deteriorated bearings and bearings with inadequate/contaminated lubricant. It does this by detecting high frequency (ultrasonic) stress waves associated with friction and other faults with machinery in poor condition (impacts etc.). It can be used to monitor bearings in motors, pumps, fans, gearboxes and other rotating machinery applications. It has two outputs – a decibel (dB) reading and a Distress® level which are both measured and displayed simultaneously by the Portamonitor™. In addition to our standard after sales customer care, you can upgrade to our Portacare® plan. This is our 3 – 5 year total care maintenance and calibration package in line with proper calibration of measuring and monitoring equipment as advised by BS (British Standard) BS EN ISO 17025 , NIST, Indian Standards etc. UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) is the sole body recognised by HM Government for assessing and accrediting the competence of calibration and testing laboratories. Their maximum calibration interval for sound intensity meters, like the Portalevel® is one year. UNIDO (United Nations Industry Development Organisation) and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) also support regular calibration.
